Sattumusten ketju, pahaa ruokaa ja Vladivostok.. The chain of coincidences, bad food and Vladivostok

5.6.2018

Yhtäkkiä huomaan olevani Siperiassa, Venäjän kaukoidässä. Itse asiassa olen aivan Venäjän toisella laidalla, Vladivostokissa.

Tää matka on nyt just sellanen.

Niiden kyyti on jotenkin rauhoittavaa. Heti kun juna nytkähti liikkeelle alkoi silmät lupsumaan. Pieni

keinuva liike, junan rytmi, ääni, tai hidas liike varmaan vaan rentouttaa.

Nukahdin melkein heti.

Me ollaan reissattu jo viikko. Näitä on mukavaa lukea myöhemmin.

5.6.2018

And suddenly I find myself from Siberia, in the Far East of Russia. In fact, I'm just on the other side of Russia, in Vladivostok. How did I get here? How did this happen?

You could say that the whole trip has been only on the odd coincidences. You could say that I've just followed the path marked out by coincidences, always looked to the next character, the pieces of information and grasp into new clues.

Do you know when life sometimes drives you to some direction and you can’t just turn your bak on it, you need to look where it would go. It’s something that pulls so hard, though it would make no sense. This trip is now just a like that.

Everything started in the Örö Residency in February 2016 when I saw Artturi Kannisto's photograph of Siperian women. That picture stopped, one of the women looked like me. I sent the picture to my mom (Anne Haapala) who knew that there were people in our family who have ones left to Siberia. We looked more information of these relatives and found out more. We found out about the Amurinmaa utopia community to which this our relative went in 1868, with the other 43 Southwest Finns, and more information around that topic. Then we found researchers: Nahodka city museum, Culture forum, Finnish National archives  and other interested ones around this topic.

In Örö residency I’ve met Finnish-Swedish artist Camilla Edström-Ödemark who told me about the artist residence in Vladivostok: Zarya, from which I am now writing this story. It's so funny but so it is. All the pieces have found a place in this puzzle. I can’t wait what’s still going to happen ...

Coincidences, is there any? Or are there just many different possibilities waiting for to catch them behind the corner? For this trip you could say that I have been following my family’s footsteps, or rather, I'm looking for in their footsteps. I follow the path that some of my relatives have already done, and on the other hand, I am in a completely new adventure, creating my own story.

To get back to the train journey that brought us here Vladivostok from Ulan Ude. It went well and quite fast also.

2.6.2018

The journey continues and again, there is one very sleepy night in the train has past. This train’s wagon where we stay is probably one of the 70's. It’s ok, a double bed cabin. I clearly enjoy the old trains. Their ride is somehow calming. As soon as the train started moving, my eyes began to close. A small swinging motion, a train's rhythm, sound, or slow motion just relaxes. I slept almost immediately. Well, yes, I was tired, but for me it’s very strange to sleep naps because I usually can not sleep in the daytime. Now I’m in snoring in a train when ever. I probably have to get some kind of train simulator to home. :)

Landscapes have now changed into rolling mountains and river valleys where cows graze and swim. Sometimes I see villages and horses in the fields, and even a few cowboy riding and shepherd their cows. Landscape is Green and at the same time dry. The soft grey-green slope resembles some huge  alien or part of it’s body.

We've been traveling for week already. It is funny to think that we are just in the beginning of our journey, we still have a whole month time to wonder. I am not so into of reading or writing at the moment as the landscapes are so cool and I just get caught watching them. However, it is nice to write down the ideas and thoughts what I’ve felt and experienced during the trip. These texts are nice to read later.

It's amazing how the mind and body changes on the move. Both settles down into such a travel mode and in to a specific time or time-perception. While traveling in the train the time is different, time reveals only / means nothing more than the basic needs of the body. Otherwise, time appears here on the train only when the sun is falling and rising, at stations when it stops, starts or reaches. Otherwise, the time doesn’t exist. It’s like a smoke of tobacco in the room in the dim light of the sun. When traveling on a train, you are so in to a moment, so close to it as you can. You just step in to the next moment, watching and accept what it brings.
